Blippi Felt Hat Beret DIY

To say my children LOVE Blippi is an understatement! My 2 yo can spell his name… that’s how much we watch him. He’s a YouTube star making super colorful children’s educational videos. We sing his Firetruck song every single day! 🙌🚒 I am grateful for his channel because his content is educational and always safe.

I decided to sew a Blippi hat with some felt I already had and it surprisingly came out pretty good. You can buy his Blippi replica hat on Amazon if you don’t want to DIY it.

Eventually, I’ll sew the suspenders and bow tie. For the Blippi Hat DIY… I found this free beret pattern/tutorial from Lil Blue Boo.

The Blue Beret - Free Pattern & Tutorial

So easy and cute! The pattern is free for personal use and has adult and child sizes. It’s intended for knits using upcycled clothes but since I only had felt in orange and blue I will have to sew in an elastic band.👉 Check out my tutorial on the bigger (adult) version of this hat 🧡💙

In order to get the alternating blue orange pattern on the top circle piece I had to do some piecing together. Since i had felt squares I didn’t have a big enough piece to fold and cut. I cut out 2 of the half circles (adding 1/4″ seam allowance on the flat edge): 1 orange and 1 blue. I cut a 1/3 piece of the alternative color for each half circle.

Make sure the triangles point towards each other (mine do not but I was hoping the button on the top could hide it). After sewing the triangles to the half circles I cut out the excess fabric under the triangles. This seemed easier than cutting 6 triangles and quilting them together.

Next you want to attach the 2 finished half circles right sides together and continue with the pattern instructions.

Again, I had to attach the 2 halves of the rim and the band because of the limited felt squares. I top stitched the sides of the seam because I didn’t have time to iron and it helped keep the felt flat at the seam. It also looks nicer.

The lasts few steps are to sew the band (with elastic or stretch fabric) and to sew the button on the top.

All done! I did not add elastic in the last piece (which has a casing for an elastic band). I will cut a slit and safety pin a 1/2″ elastic band through. After my sons have worn the hat a few times the felt has stretched and it’s now too loose.

This hat is officially approved by my 4yo Blippi fan!

I can’t wait to get the rest of the items I’ve ordered …. this might just be the best dress up outfit we have yet for both boys to be matchy-matchy. 👬🧡💙

Update 8/20/18: I added a 1/4 elastic band in the casing of the Blippi hat and it fits great on my now 3yo.

The glasses I got from WISH were adult size and too big to stay on the boys’ face. 🤷‍♀️ I definitely recommend the child size Blippi glasses on Amazon.

Another funny thing is my now 5yo is more interested in Mario Odessey and so we bought him the plush Cappy hat and he LOVES it!

    1. That’s so cute!! Blippi party 🙌🧡💙 If you needed to do many hats for the kids .. you could save time by making all orange felt beret hats and then hot glue gun the blue pieces on top. Then sew or glue the button in the middle. But I’d love to see how it all turns out for you. Thanks for commenting 🤗

  13. Trying to throw together a blippi costume for tonight real quick. The only hard part is the hat. I saw your pattern but I don’t have a printer so I was wondering if you could kind of just give me like a measurement. Like when the two have circles are put together about what’s the diameter or is the circle…. like as big as a paper plate? I think I have a pretty good idea for the band but if you don’t mind measuring it you could throw me the length and the width of it before it’s connected. Hope you can get back to me soon and also I did the talk to text thing so I hope this message doesn’t sound too silly. Have a great day

  14. I realized five days before my toddler’s daycare Halloween party that the Blippi costume I ordered online wasn’t going to arrive in time. I was able to get all of the other components (Eg. orange glasses, suspenders) quickly delivered from Amazon, but not the hat. Your post literally SAVED THE DAY. My son’s head measured about 20”, so I used the adjustments you recommended. My printer wasn’t working but I figured out the measurements (which I now see you provided elsewhere in the comments!) by measuring the pattern in Adobe (things got complicated! Ha!). I wanted to make sure the band fit, so I dug deep into the recesses of my brain to recall how circumference is measured. I did some simple math to make sure the inside circle was the right size (Eg. 20.5 = x(Pi)).
    Let me tell you.. the hat turned out PERFECT. Better than anything I could have bought. And I am not a seamstress. I know a standard sewing stitch and can thread a needle. I impressed everyone, including myself. Maybe future Halloween costumes are in my future?! The possibilities are endless.

  15. My fiancé is being Blippi for Halloween this year, and I’m going to try my hand at this. I’ve never sewn a thing in my life 😂😭 my toddler is so excited and I figure she can wear the hat after he’s done with it. I’m using fleece because Joanns was out of orange wool felt!
